Time Zone Configurations

Multiple time zone support is for showing data cards dates and times in Efecte Service Management’s user own time zone. Data cards' date and time values stored in database are converted to a time zone, that user has defined himself on user preferences. For example, if ESM's database time zone is Europe/Stockholm, a user whose time zone is Europe/Finland will see all times as 1 hour later as the other user, whose actual time zone would be Europe/Berlin.

To enable multiple time zone support, administrator must configure 3 platform settings:

  •  multiple.timezone.support -  Defines whether multiple time zones are supported in the user interface
  • database.timezone - Defines how existing dates and times are interpreted in the database
  • default.user.timezone - Defines how datetime values are shown to users who don't have a customized time zone preference set

Values for database.timezone and default.user.timezone must be written exactly correct. Correct values can be confirmed from user preferences, that shows selectable options as a list. It is suggested, that timezones are defined by their names eg. Europe/Helsinki instead of GMT+3. When using names, daylight saving time (DST) is taken account correctly. List of supported time zones can be checked here: http://tutorials.jenkov.com/java-date-time/java-util-timezone.html

Once multiple time zone has been activated, it is not advisable to disable it or change database.timezone because date and time data in database may become inconsistent.

Time zones affects to the service level agreement -management (SLA) too. Supported set up is following. For example, Incident template refers to SLA data card. SLA data card has reference to Business Hours data card.

Business hours -data card can have TimeZoneHandler defined the correct time zone.

BusinessHours handler doesn't do anything by itself, but it co-operates with other following handlers: BusinessTimeBetween, BusinessHoursFinder, SLADeadlineHandler.

ExpressionHandler also obeys time zone settings, if it is attached to date and time attribute.

Note, that all timestamps on admin views are still shown based on server's local or regional settings. Time zone settings on ESM doesn't have effect on those. As well as logs are generated on server's time zone too.
